What is the difference between professor, associate professor, and senior lecturer?

Lecturer is a lower rank than the title of professor (although anyone teaching college can be referred to as a professor); it's not a tenure-track position. Associate professors are the lowest level (recently hired), assistant professors often have tenure and have been there longer, and full professors have been at the school for 5-10 years or more and have tenure.
